Manali is a small enchanting town nestled in the Himalayas, that is known for offering a wide range of attractions that enchants visitors from across the globe.

Bijli Mahadev

Offering majestic views of snow clad parvati and Kullu valleys is the temple of Bijli Mahadev. It is located at an altitude of about 2,460m, 14 km to the south-east of Kullu across the Beas River.

The place is as beautiful as it is windy and the shrine is a ‘Khash’ style temple that has a ‘Shivling’ installed in it. It is said that the tall staff of the temple attracts the divine blessings of God in the form of lightning. It is believed that the priest of the temple has to restore the Shivalinga using butter and sattoo after every lightning. Bijli Mahadev is one of the primary attractions in Kullu. You can see the beautiful confluence of Beas and Parvati rivers and the Bhuntar Airport from the top.

This is an amazing and refreshing trek and should be a must on your list for seeking some much needed peace and calm.

Prashar Lake

The Prashar Lake is a beautiful lake located at an altitude of 2730 m. It has a perimeter of around 300 m and embraces a floating island. The lake offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mighty Dhauladhar range.

There is a beautiful temple on the bank of the lake dedicated to Prashar Rishi. The legend says that the lake was formed either as a result of striking of the rod (Gurj) by Rishi Prashar. After this the water came out and took the shape of the lake. The other legend says that after the Mahabharath, the Pandavas were returning with Lord Kamrunag and he fell so in love with the place that Bheem rammed his elbow on the ground and formed this crater, which later became the lake.

One can reach here by car or by following a rejuvenating trek from Baggi to seek the blessings of the Rishi or to find peace.

Manikaran

Manikaran is located in the Parvati Valley on river Parvati, northeast of Bhuntar in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. It is at an altitude of 1760 m and is located 4 km ahead of Kasol and about 35 km from Kullu. This small town attracts tourists visiting Manali and Kullu to its hot springs and pilgrim centres.

Manikaran is a pilgrimage centre for Hindus and Sikhs. The Hindus believe that Manu recreated human life in Manikaran after the flood, making it a sacred area. It has many temples and a gurudwara. There are temples of the Hindu deities Rama, Krishna, and Vishnu. Whereas according to the Sikhs, during third Udasi, the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak came to this place in 1574 Bikrami with his disciple Bhai Mardana.

The area is well known for its hot springs and its beautiful landscape and makes for an amazing traveller’s destination.

Kasol

A gem hidden away in the Himalayas, Kasol is paradise for any traveller and nature lover. The small town is located in the midst of the Parvati Valley and is hence visited by many backpackers, hikers and adventure enthusiasts.

The small town is also called mini Israel as it inhabits many Israeli travellers. It is the best place to relax camp and soak in nature at its best. Kasol also offers amazing food and some bakeries. It is the go to place for foodies. Around 75 kms from Manali, Kasol is easy to reach and one of the best places to visit. I assure you’ll give your heart to this place.

You can take strolls along the Parvati river, go trekking and rock-climbing, explore Kheer Ganga, relish Israeli food, shop for some amazing local products and visits nearby villages of Manikaran, Tosh and Malana.

Tirthan Valley

If you like to scout around uncharted terrain, pack your bags and head towards Tirthan valley. Jibhi is the absolute scenic hamlet in this valley. Banjar is another dreamy town here that has some extremely beautiful views to cherish.

The Tirthan Valley is a quiet valley and is ideal for trekking, fishing, wildlife watching, and discovering unexplored hill villages. There’s also the option of doing absolutely nothing as you relax among the pine trees in the valley. Shangarh

Shangarh is a beautiful village in the Sainj valley of Kullu. It is located at an altitude of 1920 m and it speaks of an enchanting tale of an enormously beautiful and vast meadow near the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP).

This beautiful yet quaint village also acts a s a base camp for numerous treks into the Great Himalayan National Park (which is a world heritage site listed by UNESCO). The legend has it that during the period of exile, the Pandavas created the Shangarh meadow to cultivate rice, so you won’t find any kind of a stone in the area irrespective of how deep you dig your feet within.

Apart from a peaceful and calm environment, there are several short and long treks originating from here, so you must put visiting Shangarh in your bucket list for sure.

The Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an absolute treasure rich with flora and fauna. Ideal to unplug from the chaos and soak in the village culture or to embark on a three to ten days trek.

The absolute beauty and the feeling of being so close to nature make the park a must visit while travelling through Kullu Manali. The place offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan Mountains on all three sides. The Great Himalayan National Park is ideal for nature lovers, trekkers and explorers. It showcases more than 375 species of fauna, 31 species of mammals and more than 181 species of birds are also seen here.

The best sighting is experienced from September to November when animals migrate to lower grounds. You will love the park for its perks of bird watching & trout fishing.

Naggar Castle

The Naggar Castle is a medieval castle built by Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu in the 15th century. Naggar had been the capital of Kullu for almost 1500 years before Kullu town was made the capital in the mid-1800s.

The castle is built in a traditional ‘kaathkuni’ styled architecture and it has been designed with such an interlocking style that it stood the major earthquake of 1905. The castle was handed over to HPTDC to run as a heritage hotel in 1978. The castle overlooks the Kullu Valley and apart from the spectacular view and superb location, it boasts of a blend of authentic western Himalayan architecture. There is also a museum downstairs which showcases exquisite arts and crafts of Himachal.

The castle compound also houses the Jagatipatt Temple and one can easily visit the premises by taking a ticket from the counter.

Roerich Art Gallery

Nicholas Roerich (Nikolai Roerich) was a Russian painter and poet who spent the later half of his years in Naggar, Kullu. He was an explorer and was also known to be a writer, philosopher, archeologist and mystic.

Nicolas Roerich’s old home has been now converted into a museum known as the Roerich Museum. The museum is well-maintained and it boasts of a wide variety of paintings of colourful nature landscapes. Following the footsteps of Nicolas Roerich, a lot of writers and painters have also made Naggar their home and a hub for anyone with a creative streak. The upper floor of the house is in a fragile state, and hence tourists are not allowed inside. The interiors can however be seen through glass panels of closed windows.

It is a very tranquil place located just above the main market in Naggar.

Hadimba Devi Temple

The Hadimba Devi Temple, locally known as Dhungari Temple, is located in Manali. It is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hadimbi Devi, wife of Bhima, a figure in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Easy to reach and among some of the most visited places in local Manali, you will definitely be swept off your feet by its simple yet fascinating presence.

The temple is surrounded by a cedar forest and is built over a huge rock jutting out of the ground which was worshiped as an image of the deity. The structure was built in 1553. The awe inspiring temple is located in the most serene and peaceful location and is the best place to sit meditate and turn blissful.

The pagoda style Hadimba Devi temple is a wondrous sight, to immerse in absolute peace and serenity away from the hustle bustle of the main city.

Tibetan Monastries

Manali also homes some beautiful Tibetan Monasteries like the Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa, and the Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa. The monasteries were long ago built by Tibetan refugees and are a perfect visit for people would wish to experience their culture.

These monasteries are built on the Pagoda pattern and also house a shrine of Lord Buddha. The serenity and the peaceful aura of these monasteries will make you the happiest person. Even though the monasteries are open all year long all the time, the shrine is open only between 7am and 7pm.

The monasteries are undoubtedly the best place to meditate and relax. Also you can purchase some beautiful traditional Tibetan art and craft products.

Solang Valley

The Solang Valley is an exciting place wrapped with adventure and thrill, 14 kilometres to the North West of the main town of Manali. The Solang Valley is also famously known as the Snow Point and due to its incredible locale, the place hosts various snow sports like skiing, parachuting and paragliding and hence constitutes for the perfect place to add to your must visit list.

The destination is located at a height of 2,560 meters above sea level and embodies magnificent views of snow clad peaks and mountains. One of the most vibrant and enjoyable places in Manali, there is no excuse to miss a visit to this amazing valley, while here. In fact, a walk in the woods in Solang is as refreshing as the chill mountain air.

Another attraction here is Anjani Mahadev where a natural Shivling is formed every year in winter and is a pilgrim centre for local devotees.

Rohtang Pass

When planning a trip to Manali, a day at the Rohtang Pass is the ultimate and almost essential attraction. The pass is located at a massive height of 3978 metres and the way up the hill is a treat to the eyes. Owing to its splendid natural beauty, Rohtang Pass is a favourite among travellers from all around the world.

Located at a distance of just 51 kilometres from the main town, Rohtang Pass can be reached only by road and makes for an incredible ride. The road stays open for vehicular traffic from June to October owing to the adverse weather conditions otherwise. The alluring mighty snowy mountains will spell bind all you nature lovers out there, leaving its imprints etched in your souls for evermore.

The Mighty Beas

The Beas River is one of the main attractions of the area and is hence also called the Heart of the Kullu Valley. The mighty Beas originates from the mighty galciers around the Beas Kund and flows for approximately 470 kms before meeting the Sutlej river in Punjab. The river also marked Alexander’s eastern border and its raging flow forced them to stop their expedition.

The beautiful Beas provides for incredible camping spots and water sport activities. You can participate in adventures like river water rafting, river crossing, and kayaking. Bhrigu Lake

The Bhrigu Lake is named after Maharishi Bhrigu. It is a sight to behold. It is around 3-4hours from Manali. It is located near the Rohtang Pass and can only be reached either by trekking from Gulabo Village or by crossing the Vashisht hot springs.

According to the locals, the lake never freezes completely and is considered extremely auspicious and sacred. The place offers a completely astounding and breath-taking view for travellers. It is most renowned for its scenic pleasure and the treks. You can also enjoy clicking a billion pictures and camping in nearby areas.

Pandoh Dam
